Thieves have the ability to steal an item from an enemy that they can use as a bundle. In terms of game mechanics, the thief does not literally steal an item, but instead creates a bundle based on the targeted creature's classification that the thief can store for later use.

That said, IMO, Playing #1 first would give you a good grasp of the mechanics and general gameplay loop in a generally easier environment. But that's not an absolutely necessity, and you can just play #2 instead and learn all the same things albeit being a bit more difficult on the whole.
